Top 5 Summer Nail Art Trends

From two-toned manis to a touch of metallic, these are the popular nail trends for summer 2019, says manicurist Elizabeth Garcia.

While spring was all about nail decals, glitter polishes, and crimson hues, this summer, we’re welcoming a whole new set of nail trends to match our fresh warm-weather wardrobes. If booking a nail appointment isn’t in your budget, you’re in luck! We recently caught up with celebrity manicurist and founder of The Nail Room, Elizabeth Garcia — whose clients include Orange Is the New Black’s Jackie Cruz, musician DaniLeigh, and model Denise Bidot — to give us some insight on the hottest summer nail trends you can recreate at home. From translucent jelly nails to a re-imagined French manicure, dress up your digits with these five nails trends that come straight off the runway and onto your fingertips for summer.

1.SO JELLY

Last year, was all about the translucent bag, and this summer, clear, jelly nails are taking over. Vivienne Westwood, Area, and Fashion East all introduced us to this fun trend that resembles the jelly sandals every girl used to wear growing up in the ’90s.

2.NUDE OBSESSION

I know what you’re thinking: No more nude! The truth is, a nice nude shade on the digits looks great any time of the year — and summer is no exception. Garcia, who says nude is one of her most requested colors of the moment, admits nudes are versatile and timeless shades that match all her clients’ formal events. Of course, we saw the trend highlighted in several runways, including Oscar de la Renta, who enlisted the help of manicurist Miss Pop to create a half-moon mani, and Gucci, with a nice flesh-tone on the fingertips. Find a nude that perfectly matches your skin tone to steal the Gucci style.

3.MODERN FRENCH

From tie-dye to hair scrunchies, there’s no question ’90s beauty and fashion trends are making a comeback. Now, the latest nostalgic style to make a resurgence is the French manicure.

“French is definitely coming back — traditional and non-traditional, using different colors,” Garcia says. “This is great because a lot of people are opting for shorter nails.”

However, Garcia notes, the French requests have been a bit more modern, with clients asking for a “two-tone” manicure, much like the nails for the Kith x Tommy Hilfiger collaboration. For that, manicurist Alicia Torello amped up the models’ digits with a fun twist on the classic French manicure, using Essie nail lacquer in “Forever Yummy” and “Bootie on Broadway.”

4.PICTURE PERFECT

Quite possibly my favorite nail trend of the season is framed nails. This manicure has the perfect minimalist design for any nail art novice. At Jeremy Scott’s fashion show, models rocked the nail trend using a neutral shade all over and a bright hue around the perimeter of each nail. Meanwhile, nail stylist Heather Reynosa created the framed effect for Libertine’s Spring/Summer collection using small gold chains to outline the nail.

“People are more open to experimenting when it comes to nails. I recently did some aquamarine almond-shaped nails on a client and added small studs along the rims of each nail,” Garcia tells MORE.

To recreate Scott’s runway look, coat your nail with a nude polish that best compliments your skin tone. Then, using a fine liner brush, slowly outline the entire nail with a bright color. Depending on your preference, you can rock a full set of framed nails or just have two accent nails.

5.SPARK OF SUNSHINE

Whether you’re relaxing poolside in a stylish bikini or soaking up sun at the beach (with some SPF, of course), one of the easiest ways to enhance your golden complexion is to add a coat of yellow nail polish to your fingertips. The bright hue, which was seen across several Spring/Summer 2019 runways, including Alice + Olivia, Natasha Zinko, and Maryam Nassir Zadeh, accentuates and draws attention to your sun-kissed glow. While we saw the trend in full force this spring, Garcia says we’ll be seeing a lot more of the joyful hue this upcoming season.

“This season is all about fluorescent colors. From lime green to yellow, these neon shades really stand out on the skin; they’re very summer!” she says.

A word of caution: Yellow nail polish can leave a stain on your bare nails after removal. Like with any laquer, we recommend using a strong base like the cult-favorite Seche Clear Crystal Clear Base Coat to protect your digits from stains.
